ALEX McLEISH opens his heart on Sir Alex Ferguson, three World Cup Finals campaigns with Scotland and the start of his coaching career at Motherwell and Hibs in Part Two of our exclusive Sport Careers Agency interview.
The former Scotland boss was moulded as a player, and in many ways as a manager, by Manchester United legend Ferguson.
He saw from the inside how one man can change the whole mindset of a football club.
He recalled: "I remember on the pitch at Rangers one day Gordon Smith told me we could never beat the Old Firm when it mattered.
"He was right then but Fergie changed all of that."
Big Eck also gives a fascinating insight to the management techniques that have made Sir Alex hot property as a Harvard lecturer and business leader.
And he smiled: "We fell out when he was in charge of Scotland and I was left out of the final game at Mexico 86 against Uruguay. He was my club boss but he stuck with David Narey and I sat a huge game out.
"I felt that I was certain to leave Aberdeen that summer but instead he talked me into a new three-year deal at Pittodrie - then left for Manchester United!"
In the second instalment of our four-part sitdown McLeish also recalls the learned vital lessons he learned as a young coach on the rise at Motherwell and Hibernian.
He revealed: "When I first went in at Well I thought: 'What would Fergie do?'
"So I rattled their cages and gave them the hairdryer treatment but it just didn't feel sincere. It wasn't me.
"By the time I got to Hibs I was growing into it. I wanted to play in a free-flowing, technical style and we did that with the likes of Franck Sauzee - the recruitment was good."
