Bowyer Hits the Ground Running
- Blackpool beat Exeter 2-0 in season opener
- Goals from Vassell and Brown (og)
- New boss Bowyer using performance as a benchmark
Sport Careers Agency client Gary Bowyer got his reign as Blackpool manager off to a successful start with a 2-0 home win over Exeter City.
The game to Bloomfield Road was the first time the Seasiders had been in action since dropping into League Two after a second successive relegation.
The early signs are looking good for Bowyer's rebuilding project. A first half goal from Kyle Vassell followed by an own goal in the second period from City's Troy Brown was enough to seal a comfortable win over Paul Tisdale's men.
Former Blackburn Rovers boss Bowyer was pleased with his team's performance, and urged his side to use it as a benchmark for the rest of the season:
"We defended really well and in the end we have got over the line quite comfortably. "You want to start in a way that sets you up and there is a lot more to come. "Even in the weather we had high energy levels and sheer determination. "Exeter have been in the league for a long time. They know how to win games and we knew it was not going to be easy. "To win 2-0 against a team like Exeter does set a bench-mark."
