Gone are the days when our great footballing heroes just hung up their boots and replaced them with slippers and a pipe. Today's Premiership stars retain much of their fitness, drive, athleticism and competitive spirit way beyond their time in the top flight.
And so Masters Football was born, set up as an Event Organiser and Sports Promoter, primarily for the Football Industry.
It was back in 2000 when the first 6-a-side UK Masters Cup event was run by Masters Football with Sky Sports TV providing the exclusive media coverage. The tournament featured teams of ex-professional players (35 years old and above) from around the world that played in the Premier League during their career. All top EPL teams have participated including Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, Newcastle, Celtic and Rangers (over 50 teams). Top European teams have also appeared in managed events, including Ajax, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The success of the UK Masters Cup led to a Home Nations tournament (comprising England, All-Ireland, Scotland and Wales). Since then, Masters Football has continued to be on Sky Sports in the UK and has been televised across five continents during this time, entertaining millions of households across the globe.
In recent years, Masters Football have concentrated on international exhibition matches. Successful tours have taken place in Brunei, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Macau, Malaysia, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, Thailand and Vietnam.
Over 2,000 professional footballers have participated in Masters Football events, with the number growing each year. Top players including: Ian Rush, Bryan Robson, Paul Scholes, Robert Pires, Emmanuel Petit, Glen Hoddle, Paul Gascoigne, Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Andy Cole and Gianfranco Zola. Managers include Sir Alex Ferguson, Kevin Keegan and Roy Evans.
Masters Football have now promoted and organised over 200 events worldwide. Feel free to look through our archives to view photos, highlights and information on any of our previous tournaments or tours.
