Gerry is a player focused football coach with extensive experience in the game having progressed from a 13 year playing career at clubs including Manchester City FC, Celtic FC and Burnley FC, to forward thinking coaching, driving continual improvement and a performance based environment as Head of Youth Development at Dundee FC.

Aiming to provide players an effective platform from which they can perform and progress, Gerry works to reduce the difficulties of the game to maximise the players’ learning and allow them to take ownership over their own development within a team framework.

Gerry provides a visible point of leadership for players and coaches alike, ensuring the necessary processes and structures are in place to support coach education, strategic player recruitment, innovative performance analysis and an effective use of financial resources.

Key Achievements

  • Developed and implemented a strategic 3 year plan at Dundee to meet the SFA’s elite Academy criteria - going on to achieve a 100% score in all but 2 audited criteria
  • 5 players from the Dundee development squad have gone on to sign professional contracts - Kerr Waddell, Greg Warwick, Liam Gibb, Jesse Curran and Calvin Colquhoun
  • Encouraged and nurtured the learning of several coaches at Dundee - with 2 SFA Children’s Licences, 2 SFA Children’s Awards, 1 UEFA B Licence and 2 UEFA A Licences being achieved
  • Trialled a new once-weekly coaching system at Dundee for specific age groups that split training into 4 sections to allow coaches to work to their strengths while assessing how players could perform when training with older players
  • Put an age-specific scouting system in place at Dundee, directly participating and contributing to player evaluation to ensure players with the right playing attributes and / or personal characteristics were recognised
  • Implemented advanced video analysis software at Dundee for both training and matches that enabled more effective adjustments of training schedules and player development plans
  • Successfully proposed and budgeted for the use of portable analysis software at Dundee
  • Drove the improvement of support services provided to Dundee’s Academy players bringing in both sports science staff and strength & conditioning coaches to aid their physical development and injury prevention
  • Introduced player well-being diaries at Dundee that enabled quick assessment of their progress and enjoyment
  • Identified and secured the budget for two grass pitches for specific use by the Dundee Academy
  • 6 players progressed to earn trials at professional Scottish clubs from Bellshill Athletic, and 5 players earned trials from the South Camlachie Youth Project, with 1 playing Scottish Premiership football in 2015/16 (Daryll Meggatt)
