A highly experienced football manager and coach who has established a strong reputation in the game since retiring from a 17 year playing career as a defender - coaching at all levels from the Premier League to League Two; winning multiple promotions including a hat-trick with Scunthorpe United FC as a Manager, Assistant Manager and player; and earning both the 2013/14 LMA League Two Manager of the Year and Special Merit awards presented by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Most recently secured York City FC’s League Two status after being appointed midway through the season, and previously led Scunthorpe United FC to automatic promotion to League One featuring a 28 game unbeaten run in his first season as a First Team Manager. Consistently helped players and staff realise their full potential throughout these and previous roles, as well as expanding an extensive contact base that spans all levels of the domestic game.

Currently assisting Ian Baraclough in managing Northern Ireland’s U21 squad after overseeing Doncaster Rovers FC’s recruitment strategy as Head of Recruitment for two years. Provides exceptional leadership and man management skills, a commitment to collective club success, and a positive approach to the game in a managerial capacity.

Key Achievements

  • Won automatic promotion to League One with Scunthorpe in a 2nd place finish in 2013/14 despite being appointed with the club in 12th position
  • Finished 11 points clear of the relegation zone in 2014/15 despite significant budget restraints at York City.
  • Named the 2013/14 LMA League Two Manager of the Year as a first time manager.
  • Led Scunthorpe on a 28 game unbeaten run (one loss in 30 games) lasting six months - earning a world record for the longest unbeaten run for a first time manager (previous record was from 1889) and an LMA Special Merit Award.
  • Helped lead Bournemouth to the first victory over Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium in 12 months in his first game at the club, before earning 17 points from the next nine games to take the team from 15th to 7th in the league
  • Worked alongside Brian Laws to lead Sheffield Wednesday to their three highest Championship finishes following relegation from the Premier League in 1999/00, as well as winning the club’s first ‘Steel City Double’ in 95 years in the 2008/09 season
  • Won automatic promotion to League One at Scunthorpe United with a 2nd place finish in 2004/05 having previously reached the play-off semi-finals in 2002/03
  • Appointed at Burnley as the club competed in the Premier League for the first time - achieving notable results such as a 4-2 home win over Tottenham as well as gaining invaluable experience coaching international calibre players
  • Has coached/helped developed the likes of Jay Rodriguez, Steven Fletcher, Jack Cork and Chris Brunt.
  • Appointed club captain at Doncaster Rovers, Hull City and Northampton Town
  • Won club Player of the Year awards in 2000/01, 1994/95, 1993/94 and 1991/92
  • Named to the League Two PFA Team of the Year in 1995/96 and 1994/95
  • Won the League Two title with Northampton Town in 1986/87 and Preston North End in 1995/96, as well as the 1998/99 play-offs with Scunthorpe United to seal promotion with each club
